Volumes 42 & 43 only (of 73) of this important series of translations of communications from Jesuit missionaries in New France, records of Jesuit activities in the French colonies, used in part to attract emigrants & donors from Europe, now an important (if subject to interpretation) source of colonial North American history. This volume includes accounts of Le Moyne's visit to Mohawk country in late 1655, the Jesuit embassy led by Dablon & Chaumonot to the Onondaga, who requested a French colony in their territory, teachers, & soldiers to fight the Erie; Radisson & Groseillier's explorations in Ottawa country, modern Wisconsin & Lake Superior, are noted (but they are not named); De Quen comments on Iroquois and Huron politics, Mohawks & Oneidas; an account of the death at Iroquois hands of Jesuit Jean Liégeois; gifts for religious structures at Quebec. The second volume includes Le Jeune's business letter regarding nuns and the Quebec convent; De Quen on various matters including Onondaga hostilities despite their declared peace, Mohawk intrigue between Hurons & Onondagas, notable arrivals from France, attacks by Iroquois, Algonkin visits, Abbé de Queylus's disputes against the Jesuits, liquor traffic, Seneca embassy slain by Mohawks, trade disputes, great council at Onondaga, successes of mission to the Iroquois, much more. Reprint, hardcover, as pictured; no jacket, likely as issued. Stated edition of 500, though this copy, stamped "complimentary" inside the front cover, is not numbered. Book shows light wear, a few scuffs, bumped corners, tanned endsheets. Text clean; 301, 326 pages; notes, facsimiles of two title pages, one manuscript. . Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
