About This Item

Philadelphia, PA: The Jewish Publication Society of America, 1979. First edition. First edition [stated]. Presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has wome wear, soiling, and edge tears/chips.. xiii, [1], 348 p. Illustrations. Tables. Sources. Notes. Bibliography. Index. This work is the first full-scale study in English of what was then the fifth largest Jewish community in the world. It is a compelling account of a community pursuing its destine in a land that had displayed both hospitality and hatred toward Jews. The author traces the development of this community from its colonial origins through the nineteenth and twentieth century waves of immigration and addresses the situation where half of the then recorded acts of anti-Semitism worldwide were reported in Argentina.
