About This Item

Washington: Printed at the Office of the National Journal, 1831. 32pp. Gathered signatures, stitched, untrimmed. Light soil and wear, light institutional stamping. Good+.

The first Convention of the Whig Party [still called National Republicans here], created by opposition to Andrew Jackson and, especially, his veto of the Maysville Road bill. The Whig platform of federal support for internal improvements, a protective tariff to nurture infant industries, and a strong Bank of the United States is articulated here. This Journal lists the Convention members, the proceedings, the nomination of Clay unanimously for President and John Sergeant for Vice President, their acceptances, and the 'Address of the National Republican Convention to the People of the United States' articulating the Whig creed that would make it a major political force until the slavery crisis dissolved it in the mid-1850's.
FIRST EDITION. Sabin 36729. AI 8369 [5]. Not in Eberstadt, Decker.
