London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1908. The First Edition has for sale this extremely rare Rudyard Kipling book, The Jungle Book, which has been illustrated by both brothers Maurice (Charles Frederick) and Edward (Barton - later changed to Julius - hence he became known as E.J. Detmold) Detmold. This rare edition of The Jungle Book is complete with 16 full page colour plates and its original gilt decoration red binding.____The significance of this rare edition of The Jungle Book is that this is the last book to have been illustrated by Maurice Detmold before he committed suicide in 1908.____The original red boards with gilt decoration to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine is in Good condition, being complete but with wear and marks; edge wear; corner knocks (particularly to the bottom left corner of the back board); darkening to the spine; and slight shelf lean.____The Jungle Book has 314 numbered pages with the half title page, colour Frontispiece, Title page, Preface, Contents page, list of illustrations, 16 colour plates, the story of The Jungle Book, and two pages of advertisements to the end of the book, all top edge gilt (teg). The pages are clean with slight spots and marginal toning, and in overall Very Good condition.____This rare Rudyard Kipling book of The Jungle Book is hard to find, with this first edition by Maurice and Edward Detmold rarely appearing for sale. This will make a wonderful addition to any collection.. Thus First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Maurice and Edward Detmold.
