From lower cover: “Few episodes in American history are more romantic or controversial than the Battle of Little bighorn. For a hundred years scholars have sought a satisfactory explanation of what occurred that fateful day in 1876 when Sioux and Cheyenne warriors overwhelmed the Seventh Cavalry.” Custer’s men were supposedly superior in every respect except numbers, yet the unorganized and poorly armed Indian warriors inflicted one of the most stinging defeats ever suffered by the U.S. Cavalry. Of all the explanations put forward since then, none will be as controversial as the one offered here by Dr. Marquis, an obscure, dedicated physician who for many years in the first quarter of this century worked with the Cheyenne people near the Custer battlefield. He befriended the aged veterans of the Custer fight, became adept at their sign language, and spent days in conversation with them. The old warriors lilke him, and spoke to him honestly and frrely. After years of working with them, Marquis wrote this book. He had reached a simple but shocking conclusion: the troops at Little Bighorn with Custer had panicked, and most of them had committed suicide!
