Born at Brookville, Indiana, in 1827, he was the son of David Wallace, the governor of Indiana from 1837 to 1840. Lew Wallace's early bent toward romanticism was stirred by his enthusiasm for William H. Prescott's History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843). During the Mexican War (1846-1848), young Wallace served as a second lieutenant.
