About This Item
Hartford: J. B. Burr and Hyde, 1871. First American Edition 1st Printing. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. First Edition First Printing 1871. From the recently auctioned collection of Homer & M. B. Goldstone (Steinbeck's bibliographers). This copy has the signature of McWaters on the front free endpaper. A very good to near fine copy in dark brown cloth over boards--gilt lettering and decorations to the front board and spine. Some moderate fading to the spine. A tight sturdy copy without any interior markings--clean throughout. Light foxing and age toning only. A rare glimpse into the past of crime detection in New York City by a New York City detective of the mid nineteenth century. 665 pp of recounts of all facets of crime solving or "Knots Untied". A very interesting read about crime detection without the use of scientific means--when the detective relied more on gut instincts and tough questioning. The Goldstone brothers were prolific collectors of early detective fiction.
