Very first book to chronicle the exploits of the author & his team of 5 intrepid adventurers as they attempted to cross the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft made of 40-foot balsa logs--Kon-Tii--to test the theory that the South Sea Islands had been populated by explorers from Peru. In 304 pages with Index + profuse live-action black-and-white photos throughout. Orig. published in Norwegian in 1950, this is the First English-language Edition, but the Fifth printing, from Nov. 1950. Hardcover 8vo has black cloth-covered boards with an embossed tiki design to front cover , with gilt lettering & design to spine. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white & unmarked save for presentation inscription in neat pen to verso of half-title page. Mild rubbing to extremities. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $4.00 price intact on front flap) is Fair-Good, with heavy rubbing & many small holes & chips. Nicely preserved in clear mylar cover Free!
