Octavo, 216pp. Green cloth boards, title stamped in green on spine and front cover. Stated "first edition" with no additional printings listed on copyright page. Slight lean to text block, touch of wear to cloth at top edge of spine, a near fine example. In publisher's dust jacket, $2.00 retail price on front flap, closed tear along front flap fold, chip to rear flap, faint toning to spine, light soiling to rear panel. Housed in a custom black cloth clamshell case. (Johnson, The Dark Page, p. 64) An attractive example. Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) was a popular American-British crime and mystery writer. Six of his seven novels have been adapted into films, including The Lady in the Lake in 1947. Jacques Barzun, co-author of A Catalogue of Crime, called this novel "Chandler's masterpiece.

Synopsis

Derace Kingsley's wife ran away to Mexico to get a quickie divorce and marry a Casanova-wannabe named Chris Lavery. Or so the note she left her husband insisted. Trouble is, when Philip Marlowe asks Lavery about it he denies everything and sends the private investigator packing with a flea lodged firmly in his ear. But when Marlowe next encounters Lavery, he's denying nothing – on account of the two bullet holes in his heart. Now Marlowe's on the trail of a killer, who leads him out of smoggy LA all the way to a murky mountain lake ...
