Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1871. Hard Cover. Good. Mauchline Tartanware covers with leather spine decorated in gilt. Prince "Charlie" tartan pattern on the covers, with an illustration of Edinburgh Castle in a center oval. 375 pp. Black and white illustrations by John Gilbert and Birket Foster throughout. 11 albumen photographs tipped in throughout. A decorative edition of this classic work by Sir Walter Scott, bearing a mauchline tartanware binding and albumen photos. GOOD condition. Minor scuffing and soiling to the covers. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the spine. Rear hinge split along its length, with a chip missing from the head of the spine. Interior hinge cracked and separated between the first and second endpaper. Text block toned with minor scattered foxing. Slight mothball odor when opened.

Synopsis

The Lady of the Lake marked the pinnacle of Scott's popularity as a poet. With 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry. Known as a romantic poem, it tells about love and honor amidst a bitter rivalry between King James V and the Douglas family. The book is set in the Trossachs region of Scotland and  it is composed of six cantos, each concern the action of a single day.
