Translated from the German by Rita Grabham-Hortmann. Cologne: M. DuMont Schauberg, 1958 Roy.4to. 137pp. 68 figures on plates, (many coloured), 48 text illustrations, endpaper maps, appendix, biblio., index, dw, slipcase. The appendix is attached to the rear board and contains (among other illustrations), ground plans of the churches. "As the wife of the German Ambassador in Addis Ababa, Irmgard Bidder was able to carry out her research into the Lalibela monoliths with the support and encouragement of the highest government authorities." An excellent copy of the English first edition in the publisher's red cloth with the dustwrapper and slipcase.
