Bound by Henry Sotheran & Co.The third thousandth, published in the same year as the first edition.A vivid travel work by Paul B. du Chaillu, describing his explorations of Scandinavia. 'The Land of the Midnight Sun' describes Chaillu's journeys through Sweden, Norway, Lapland, and Finland, between the years 1871 and 1878. Chaillu set out with the intention of studying the physical characteristics of the country, in the end producing this detailed study on the manners and customs of its inhabitants. Volume I is illustrated with a folding plate to the frontispiece, one folding map, thirty plates, and in-text illustrations throughout.Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece, twenty plates, and in-text illustrations throughout.Chaillu is also known for researching the prehistory of Scandinavia, and was also a member of J. M. Barrie's amateur cricket time 'the Allahakbarries'.Bookplate of the Durban Club to the front paste downs.Collated, all illustrations are present. Bound without the publisher's adverts. In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Leather is a little rubbed, heavier to the spines. Marks to the leather, a few lighter marks to the boards. A small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spots, spotting heavier to the first and last few pages. Folding plate and folding map are reinforced with cloth. Good
