Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1964. 1st American Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. Originally published in Italian under the title "Il Fu Mattia Pascal." viii, 252 p.p. Light blue cloth boards with gilt and black lettering to spine, Spine ends are lightly bumped and chafed, else in fine condition. Colour illustrated dust jacket is price clipped, bumping to spine ends and edges, a few spots of wear to edges, damp stain to front flap and head of spine/rear cover, closed tear to spine head. In the sixty years since its first publication, in Italian, it has become accepted as one of the great novels of this century, but it had been out of print in America for many years. In this striking new translation, Pirandello's wry humor, his extraordinary ability to create fully realized characters moving in real and dramatic situations, and to use those characters for probing metaphysical problems becomes clear.
