1670 Pignoria Mensa Isiaca EGYPT Illustrated Egyptian Hieroglyphics A. Kircher

Lorenzo Pignoria's 'Mensa Isiaca' is known to be the first significant study on Egyptology and the history of Ancient Egypt. The name of the work comes from the most famous Egyptian artifact named the Mensa Isiaca, a bronze tablet with Egyptian hieroglyphs on it. Pignoria, after examining the tablet, believed that it was a piece describing Egyptian ritual ceremonies including human sacrifice!

Beginning with the 1669 third edition, this work was famously printed and published with another of Pignoria's works –'Magnae Deum Matris Idaeae' – a treatise on the cult of roman gods Cybele and Attis. These works include 37 impressive illustrations of coins, gods, mummies, artifacts, and much more.

1880 History of CRUSADES 1st ed Michaud Holy Wars Jerusalem Dore ART Illustrated

A rare, 19th-century printing of Joseph-François Michaud's "History of the Crusades". Michaud's principal work discusses the beginning of the crusades through the Council of Clermont. It covers the departure of crusaders after the Council of Nicee, the Siege of Antioch, Election of Godefroy, Battle of Ascalon, reign of Baudouin II, conquests of Saladin, and the events designed to protect Jerusalem from a fall.

This very rare 1880 first English printing of Michaud's masterpiece is noticeably more desirable that other editions. Not only does this work feature the artwork of Gustave Doré, it is also an impressive set of two enormous tomes!

1723 History of Netherlands 1ed Holland Voyages MAP Dutch MEDALS COINS Utrecht
Jean Le Clerc's "History of the Netherlands" is considered one of the best 18th-century sources on the political and militaristic history of the numerous states of Holland. Le Clerc describes a year-by-year chronology of major events in the Netherlands, complete with impressive folding maps and engravings. Much to be desired, Clerc utilizes a world map that depicts California as a large island off the west coast of the North America.
This set also features a first edition printing of Le Clerc's 'Historical Explanation of the Medals of the Netherlands'. First published in 1723, this work is a detailed account of the origins of the Dutch republic with descriptions of major events and figures from throughout the 16th-century until the Treaty of Utrecht and the end of the Spanish Succession... And while the contents are accurate and thorough, the main draw of this work is the inclusion of over 100 engravings of coins, medals,… Read More

He is remembered for his best-known works such as 'Summa Theologica' as well as his Bible commentaries on Old Testament prophets and the Epistles of Paul. Throughout his commentaries, Aquinas supports with his principle that everything Jesus did on earth was to teach us and leave an example.

1572 PLUTARCH Parallel Lives Latin & GREEK Alexander Great 5v FAMED Estienne

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled."
― Plutarch

'Plutarch's Lives' or 'Parallel Lives' is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures. Plutarch was not so much focused on providing a historical account of these famous individuals as much as he was seeking to write of the type of person they were and the life in which they lived. He focuses on Alexander the Great, Romulus and Remus, Demosthenes, Cicero, Brutus, Julius Caesar, and many other important figures.

This rare undated 16th-century edition was edited and translated by Wilhelm Xylander, a notable German scholar and published by the famed Henri Estienne. Xylander was well known for his commentary and edits of Greek and Roman masters found in these volumes including Fabius Maximus, Timoleon, Pelopidas, and many others.

Description:
1757 History of Paraguay 1ed Charlevoix NEGRO SLAVERY Jesuit Voyages MAPS 6v
Pierre Charlevoix was an 18th-century French Jesuit writer known for his informational surveys of Jesuit missionary voyages around the world. He published reports on voyages in Paraguay, Brazil and other South American countries, as well as voyages in Asia even though he himself never visited these locations. His 'History of Paraguay' is a valuable history of the Jesuit missionary voyages to South America and includes extensive descriptions on Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, and parts of Argentina with information about local tribes. Perhaps Cox's description of the work is the most telling of its value:
"The most complete and satisfactory work on Paraguay, and the only one in which the vast system of the Jesuits is fully developed, the position of the author affording him peculiar opportunities for its examination."
There were, however, some quite controversial inclusions in this book as well. According to Christophe,

Description:
1648 Thomas Fuller Holy vs Profane State Joan of Arc Witch Endor Paracelsus
'The Holy State and the Profane State' is a 17th-century book by English historian Thomas Fuller. Through maxims and short commentary, Fuller describes the roles and life of every member of the holy state and the profane state (i.e., good people vs. bad people) – instruction on how to live a good life for wives, husbands, and children, physicians, merchants, notes on how to travel, service roles for bishops, and others. Fuller balances the roles of good living with those who live the 'profane' life – hypocrites, liars, atheists, tyrants, witches (including the Witch of Endor), and even comments on Joan of Arc as a villain!

Description:
1672 Court Songs & Poems 1ed Poetaster Robert Veel English Charles VIII France

Robert Veel was a 17th-century English poet, who, according to most poet scholars, was a poetaster or…inferior poet. While living a rather less-than upright lifestyle, Veel was eager to fund his habits and life of folly, Veel wrote poetic verses in hopes to amuse others. He died at only 28 years old, but before he passed, Veel published, in 1672, a collection of long songs, poetic verses, and drinking shanties called "New Court Songs and Poems". One is particularly curious – a love song from Charles VIII of France!

Noel Taillepied was a 16th-century French author best-remembered for his book on supernatural and extraordinary phenomena. While it is filled with ghost stories of all kinds, one of the best is a section on the Witch of Endor. Taillepied also describes angels, demons, and other biblical entities and characters, nightmares and incubus hauntings, and so much more!

Description:
1724 Famed BLACK BOOK 1ed Arms Order of the Garter ENGLAND Heraldry Illustrated
John Anstis was a 17th-century English heraldry historian who served as the King of Arms for the Order of the Garter. The Order of the Garter, established in the 14th-century, was one of the most prestigious chivalric orders in all of England. Because of his involvement in the order, Anstis began collection heraldic arms of noble officers and members and published them in an impressive work that was infamously called 'The Black Book'! More commonly called 'The Register of the order of the Garter', this two-volume work features huge, full-page displays of heraldic arms with detailed memoirs of each member.
According to Wagner in "Heralds of England".
"Glover, Camden and Dugdale are formidable names, yet it may be questioned whether Anstis did not in strictly heraldic learning surpass them all. In perusing his manuscript remains one is constantly astonished at the breadth and depth of his scholarship and his mastery of a… Read More

1519 LAW Corpus Juris Civilis Justinian CODEX Byzantine P. Incunable HUGE FOLIO

"Freedom is the natural ability of everyone to do what he likes, unless it is prohibited by law or by force."
― Justinian I

Justinian's 'Corpus Juris Civilis' is unquestionably the fundamental work on law and jurisprudence! Parts of this work were originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook – they actually carried legal weight …as law! It includes four distinct parts – Codex, Digest, Institutes, and Novellae – each written with a different purpose.

'Codex' was the Justinian's attempt at organizing the laws in a systematic manner. Recognizing that the law system needed to be fixed, 'Codex' covers ecclesiastical law, criminal and civil law, the way laws were written and put into effect, duties of government officials, and proper administrative regulations.

This extremely rare and valuable 1519 edition is a massive folio published in Lyon by Francois Fradin.
