About This Item
1856 1ed SLAVERY Parables Doughfaces Lyman Abolition UGRR Pardee PROVENANCE
Darius Lyman wrote an attack on slavery, particularly those in the North who were not fighting against slavery, called 'Leaven for Doughfaces.' "Doughface" was a term to describe politicians who had no backbone and so were pliable like dough thus his 'leaven' was hoping to get them to rise to stand up against slavery. Lyman includes chapters on:
· Slavery established in a community makes Free Laborers poor
· A Nation based upon liberty is disgraced by slavery
· American Church indifferent to slavery
· The Congress of Republics
· The Christian Slave
· Black Ambassadors
· The Cracked Liberty Bell
· The Doughface's Letter
This 1856 first edition is illustrated with eight black and white plates!
