About This Item

New York: G. P. Putnam & Co, 1859. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Five octavo volumes, 4to. Volume I is first printing with John F. Trow. In Volume 2 the Map of Westchester County is inserted after p. 276 though listed as after p. 270; it is an unrecorded variant with an imprint date of 1856 instead of 1855 as called for. Volume 3, p. 248, l., 6 up, is first state, with "near, Fishkill..." Volume 4 seems to be Printing A, with no ads, and the final leaf (33-4) is present.

In a spectacular binding by the Harcourt Bindery of half scarlet morocco. Spines in 5 compartments with raised bands, and intricately gilt, with the US shields having onlays of blue and 13 stars, gilt. Marbled paper boards end endpapers. Top edges gilt. Ribbon markers, Upper hinge neatly repaired on Volume I. Hinges and edges lightly rubbed, some corners worn. Portraits generally with some foxing, offset to the tissue and opposite page, otherwise this is a near fine set. Originally announced in three volumes, but with the publication of Volume 3 the publishers announced the work would be completes in five volumes.
