About Henry Clay: Henry Clay Sr. (1777 – 1852) was an American lawyer and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. He was the seventh House speaker as well as the ninth secretary of state. He unsuccessfully ran for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 elections.
Known as the "Great Compromiser," Clay drafted legislation to reduce the conflict between slave states of the South and the free states of the North; the Comprise of 1850 passed in September of 1850 and delayed secession and civil war for another 10 years. Henry Clay died in 1852, still serving his country and home state of Kentucky in the Senate and was the first person accorded the honor of lying in state at the United States Capitol.
