The pamphlet is 4 pages in length and contains two excerpts from Churchill's House of Commons Speech of 24 February 1903 - the last of his famous six oratorical assaults on Brodrick's plan to expand the Army. In 1903 Winston Churchill was a brash new member of Parliament. Then Secretary of State for War, John Brodrick, had introduced a plan for expanding the peacetime Army. Brodrick was a fellow Conservative and Cabinet member. Churchill had been an Army officer and had partaken in four wars on three continents before election to Parliament in 1900. With folding map and 11 full page plates. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands, decorative gilt compartments and title label to spine, with titles and gilt border to front board. It is clean, but with wear to corners (with leather loss), and the top and bottom of the spine. There is splitting at the front spine joint. "Bunny" Lang, the Poets' Theater, and other parts of cultural life in and around Cambridge, Massachusetts in the early post-War years. Paperback, 6-3/4" x 9-1/2", white card wraps quite clean under original paper French-fold dust jacket with cover drawing by Lurie's friend Ted Gorey. The jacket is slightly soiled and age-toned, lacking the outer glassine layer. The text block is detached from the wraps (but pages remain bound together) and we have left to a future owner any decision on repair. Faint foxing to edges and end papers.
