About This Item
Privately Printed, 1910. Hardcover. Very Good-. Quarto hardcover, cloth spine, paper over boards with titles in gilt, no additional printings. Sixteen pages with two additional unpaginated pages of facsimile documents. Tipped-in photograph (2-1/8" x 3-3/8") of Lincoln as frontispiece. Abraham Lincoln's account of the failed Hampton Roads peace conference of 3 February 1865. This copy signed by Stewart to Clark Prescott Bissett on the front endpaper: "C P Bissett Esq/ Compliments of/Judd Stewart/ Apr 28/11. Bissett's fireplace bookplate is present on the front pastedown. Presented to the State College of Washington by Mrs. A. W. Witherspoon as part of the Witherspoon/Bissett Collection with a tipped-in bookplate to the front pastedown identifying this title as a volume in the Lincoln Collection, and overstamped "Withdrawn". Small letter and number code in ink to front endpaper; six-digit stamp to foreword page; otherwise unmarked. The boards have moderate wear at the corners, lightly rubbed through on the uppers and heavier wear, with a bit of surface chipping, at the lowers. The boards have toned some, although the lettering is still bright. The front board has a small surface chip at the lower edge of the paper/cloth overlay and two faint scuffs near the right edge. The binding has a very slight separation between the second blank and the frontispiece. The scan provided may not show all the edgewear as the book is slightly larger than the scanner bed. A digital photograph failed to show any detail, including the lettering, and so was rejected. A scarce title with an impressive provenance. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
