Attorney, Western Electric Co. , Inc. , 195 Broadway, New York, U. S. A". Laid in at page 409 is a letter addressed to D. C. , from Clarence G. Stoll, 195 Broadway, New York, who was retiring on August 22, with no year given on the letter, the handwriting being of old school. Petrie, who ran unsuccessfully against John Bristow for a seat in the House of Commons from the Borough of Cricklade, discovered that the winner purchased votes, and took Bristow to court. Petrie prevailed, and this book deals with the lawsuit, as well as other issues which came to light. An extremely rare volume in its original state. The publisher's introductory note states: "In now publishing these extracts it is hoped that Mr. Churchill's eloquent and emphatic criticism of the present Land System will not be lost sight of in the post-war reconstruction for a New Social Order of which so much is being heard." This booklet contains the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 4 October 1947 at the 68th Annual Conservative Party Conference. Two years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. At the 68th Annual Conservative Party Conference, Churchill addressed a mass meeting of 2,500 held at The Dome at Brighton at the conclusion of the conference on a Saturday afternoon. This lengthy address appears at pp.114-121 of this 123-page "Verbatim Report of the Proceedings together with the Text of Mr. Churchill's Speech".
