1907 1ed Fleischmann SIGNED Norway HUNTING Polar Arctic Voyage Meteorology MAP

In 1906, the famed Fleischmann family took a hunting expedition to the Arctic Seas. Known for their manufacturing of baking products, yeasts, and breads, Max Fleischmann and his wife took to Norway accompanied by his sister Bettie and her husband Christian. Bettie kept extensive notes of the voyage in her journal and later published the journal in a luxury, deluxe book for close friends and family.

Filled with photogravure illustrations, this book is one of the best early 20th-century sources of the Arctic Sea, Norway, and Greenland covering the behavior of ice and glaciers, weather patterns, polar bears and other arctic animals, and detailed hunting lists of game. Bettie also included a double-page map of the course that their ship the 'Laura' took.

Interestingly, this first edition was signed by Bettie herself with an inscription that reads:

"This book was issued in limited editions, privately printed and the type distributed. Bettie Fleishmann Holmes."

Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was a 17th-century French engineer who, after serving as the Marshal of France, became known as the greatest engineer of his time. It was from his surveys and developments in fortifications that propelled him to engineering fame. In fact, his fortification philosophies were used for nearly a century after his life. Dominique Busnot was an 18th-century French historian who, after traveling to Morocco numerous times, wrote what became his most famous and important work – "History of Mouley Ismael, King of Morocco". Mouley Ismael served as king for nearly fifty years and is remembered for expanding Moroccan territory through military strength and diplomacy with European powers. Busnot describes Mouley's reign as bloodthirsty, having taken French Christians as prisoner by Moroccan pirates. Having spent many years in Morocco negotiating with Moroccan leaders for the release of these prisoners, Busnot wrote this work to convince readers to help financially with the efforts to free the Christian prisoners from Morocco.

This 1731 edition of Busnot's most famous work was published in Rouen by Pierre Machuse and includes Busnot position on the church's tradition of pardoning slaves.

The artist's abstract and quite varied series of 43 drawings of flags, all printed monochrome on the recto of pages. Kingsley Parker has been exhibiting and represented by galleries since the mid-1970s and has a work in the collection of the Museum Of Modern Art in New York, NY. The artist is quite active with new works. Signed in ink "K. Parker/1976 ©" in the front matter where Parker explains his motivation for drawing the series of abstract flags. Copy 158 of a limited edition of 600, numbered in the colophon. Approximately 44 pages, unpaginated. Printed on fine, machine-made paper in brown wraps.
