Longmans, Green & Co. First UK edition published by Longmans, Green and Co in 1900. This is a very good copy. The boards have light marks. There is a scratch about 3 inches long on the back board. There are three pin holes on the spine. The spine has cracked on the inside board however the book is well bound. There is a previous owners name on the front free end paper. There is the odd foxing mark throughout the book with moderate foxing to the first couple of pages. Overall a very good copy and complete with all fold out maps.  A very good copy of this first edition. This is Churchill's account of his time served in the second Boer war including his capture and unlikely escape from a prison camp. His recollections were first published in The Morning Post and then collectively in book form here. [Woods A4]  . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1900.

Cassell. First edition of this comprehensive collection of horror short stories, edited by Alexander Laing and published by Cassell in 1937. The book and wrapper are in very good or better condition. The book has a gentle push to one corner and the spine ends. Overall a nice copy. James, Arthur Machen, Edgar Allan Poe, Saki, Ambrose Bierce and Edith Wharton all contribute haunted tales. The real star of the show though is illustrator Lynd Ward who contributes 62 illustrations, either full page, vignettes or tail pieces to accompany each story.  . Very Good. J.M. Dent & Sons. First edition published by J.M Dent and Sons in 1911. This is a very good or better copy. The green cloth boards are in excellent shape with no bumps or marks. The spine is lettered in gilt along with a gilt motif. The front board is lettered in black. A first issue copy. The pages have scattered foxing in places and the front and last end papers have lighter square patches where perhaps a wrapper or insert had sat. All illustrations are present.  1500 copies of the author's first travel book were printed but around 900 were pulped, making copies in decent condition quite rare. Douglas documents his journey through southern Italy. He discusses mythology, folklore, ghosts and patron saints along with a history of the region and detailing of the landscape.  . Very Good. Description:
Toronto: The Copp, Clark Company, Ltd., 1900. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. This is the Canadian first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. Both U.S. and Canadian editions were published in June 1900. The Canadian is the scarcest of the three English-language first editions. This Canadian edition was bound in tan cloth with an illustrated front cover like its British counterpart, and is easily distinguishable by a red fleur-de-lis on the spine, thinner binding, and black title and author print. The attractive binding is prone to both hinge breaks and severe spine toning. Here is a respectable and sound ex-library copy. The binding is clean, tight, and square, with only modest shelf wear to extremities and mild spine toning. Nonetheless, there is a whitish rectangle below the author's name on the spine, ostensibly from removal of a library label, library number stamps on both pastedowns, the half title, and the title page, scarring from library pocket removal on the rear pastedown and… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. The British first edition is striking, bound in tan cloth with an illustration of an armoured train on the front cover accompanied by the author's facsimile signature and with the Union flag and Transvaal flag in gilt on the spine beneath a red subtitle. The binding is visually arresting, but the first edition proved notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. Truly fine copies are virtually a chimera. This first edition, first printing is a sound and complete survivor, but nonetheless only in good condition, showing both its age and the various depredations to which the edition proved susceptible. The striking illustrated binding is tight, though soiled and stained, spine toned,… Read More
