About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1894. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition, three volume set of George Meredith's Lord Ormont and his Aminta. First edition. Three volumes, complete. George Meredith, OM, 1828 – 1909, was an English novelist and poet during the Victorian era. At the age of 14 he was sent to a Moravian School in Neuwied, Germany, where he remained for two years. He read law and was articled as a solicitor, but abandoned that profession for journalism and poetry shortly after marrying. Meredith supplemented his often uncertain writer's income with a job as a publisher's reader. His advice to Chapman and Hall made him influential in the world of letters. He succeeded Lord Tennyson as president of the Society of Authors and in 1905 he was appointed to the Order of Merit by King Edward VII. The bindings are loose in places. The inner rear hinge of volume II is strained. There is mild wear to the extremities, including mild bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally clean, with the very occasional handling mark, and with some very slight browning to the page edges. There is some mild spotting to the endpapers. Bound in green cloth, with gilt lettering and stamped decoration. Very Good
