About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, n.y.. Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with white spine lettering, price-clipped dust jacket. vii, 310pp. Fine/near fine. Tight and handsome later printing (14th) of this 1942 title described thusly on front jacket panel: "One of America's leading psychiatrists analyzes the war of the emotions within each of us, and shows how the power of love can shape our instinctual aggressiveness to the service of human happiness." A fine family presentation copy, featuring enormous author inscription and signature in black ballpoint on front flyleaf: "for [---] / my young kinswomen / Karl Menninger / Topeka / 1978 / Kindness of Phil Menninger / my fond nephew." Karl was elder brother (1893-1990) of William (1899-1966), with whom he founded the famed Menninger Clinic of Topeka, Kansas, pioneers in the treatment of behavioral disorders, and Philip B. (1928-2016) was one of William's three children and a long-time Menninger Clinic staffer; recipient was offspring of one of his nephews.
