1955 NARNIA Chronicles 1st/1st C.S. LEWIS The Magician's Nephew Fantasy + DJ

"The Magician's Nephew" written by C.S. Lewis and illustrated by Pauline Baynes, is the origin story of the fantastical world of Narnia. Published in 1955 as the sixth installment in "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, it is the first chronologically, revealing how Narnia came to be. The tale starts in England with two children who stumble upon a peculiar method of traveling between different worlds. Their adventures lead them to witness the majestic creation of Narnia by the powerful lion, Aslan. This act of creation draws on elements from our own world, like a seemingly out-of-place lamp-post. The narrative also sheds light on how various elements, such as the enigmatic White Witch and a human monarchy, became integral to Narnia. Lewis intertwines profound themes like temptation, morality, and the consequences of one's actions in this enchanting precursor to the beloved series.

Published in London by The Bodley Head in 1955 this first edition, first printing is significantly rare!

Thomas Littleton was a 15th-century English jurist known for his treatises on tenures. This book has long been considered the first text on English property law and ownership rights. Description:
1627 1ed SCOTLAND & IRELAND Respublica History George Buchanan Britain Elzevier

George Buchanan was a 16th-century Scottish historian who has been lauded as "the most profound intellectual 16th-century Scotland produced." He was known for many historical writings, but his final major work, "History of Scotland" was his attempt to skew or change the perceived Scottish national history. Most of the work is based on his own experience in 16th-century Scotland, as well as the history of Hector Boece and his 15th-century Scottish philosophy. Buchanan himself knew that his work would be offensive to many Scots. He said it would, "content few and displease many".

The famed Lyon publisher Elzevier published a series of travel guides under the title 'Respublica'. This work is a collection of various authors on European countries focusing on geography and historical significance. This 1627 first edition covers Scotland and Ireland and includes contributions by the famed Scottish experts Buchanan and Boece… Read More

Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history 'Spectacle of Nature'. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit.
Pluche, however, was not known for just 'Spectacle'. He wrote several other works including a large geographical concordance. This book, published in 1764, is an alphabetical concordance supplemented with 14 folding plates and maps.

1695 ENGLISH 1ed Treatise on Epic Poetry VIRGIL Homer Aesop Dryden Rene Bossu

René Le Bossu was a prestigious 17th-century French literary critic best-known for his commentary on epic poetry. In his book "Treatise on Epic Poetry", Bossu focused on what makes successful epic poetry, identifying that subject matter took precedence over characters and character development. Much of the commentary comes from Bossu's study of Homer, Aesop, and Virgil and Dryden's famous interpretations.

This 1695 first English edition of Bossu was published with an essay on satire by Dacier as well as Fontenelle's treatise on pastoral literature.

1537 1ed Orthodox Saint John Chrysostom On the Priesthood + Brixius Marburg

A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving.
"Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz)

One of his most important treatises was 'On the Priesthood' in which he describes his experiences becoming a priest and living as a priest. Interestingly, this work was popular during his lifetime as he made references to it in his other works.

1623 John Wemyss The Christian Synagogue JUDAISM in Scotland Hebrew Temple RARE

John Wemyss was an early 17th-century Scottish clergyman who was much better known for his studies in Hebrew exegesis. He is widely considered to be the pioneering Jewish scholar in Scotland, much in part to this advocating for Jewish culture in Scotland. In 1623, Wemyss, also spelled Weemes, published his first work of Judaica, 'The Christian Synagogue'. In this book, Weemes focuses on the customs of both the ancient Hebrews and modern Jews and the many Europeans that have converted to Judaism. There is a heavy emphasis on prayer and sacrifice throughout this book. According to Culotta, Weemes compares the use of prayer and sacrifice in both the Hebrew temple and the Hebrew synagogue.

This book also contains descriptions of the Old Testament Hebrew temple as well as the Temple of Jerusalem as it was during the time of Moses.

"I grabbed a pile of dust, and holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I forgot to ask that they be years of youth."
― Ovid, Metamorphoses
This first Hackiana edition of the works of Ovid is very rare! This printing includes notes and commentary of Nicolas Heinsius, and according to Brunet,
"this edition's notes are more numerous and better chosen than that of the previous edition. [i.e. Schrevelio, 1661]"
Further still, Graesse says of the commentary in this edition:
"The publisher has made a fairly reasonable choice of the commentaries of the various commentators."
This complete 3-volume set includes Ovid's most famous work 'Metamorphoses' and is illustrated with 19 beautiful full-page copper engravings

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
