About This Item
No Binding. Fair. Printed for R Butters, Fleet Street, London, no date; small 6mo, 48pp; disbound from a larger work, perhaps a collection of plays such as in a volume of "The Theatrical Magazine" an advertisement for which appears on the final page, and in consequence without covers; slight damage (without text loss) to the title page and a tiny worm track affecting the very foot of the last six leaves; outer pages somewhat dust marked and with some further dust marking and evidence of handling internally. Based on and adapted from Voltaire's five act tragedy "Mahomet" - which was first staged in April 1741 - Miller's version opened almost exactly three years later and a few days before his death aged around 40. The fifth act of his version was completed by his friend John Hoadley. There's no indication of the date of printing but as Butters's business was at 79 Fleet Street at least during the period 1782 to 1795 (later moving to 22 Fetter Lane) this window is consistent with the general appearance of the printing of this play.
