About This Item

1663 1ed Fruit Trees Cultivation Botany Espalier Pruning Legendre Garden Orchard

Antoine Legendre's 'Maniere de Cultiver les Arbres Fruitiers' is a rare, mid-17th-century botanical treatise written to instruct on the proper way to cultivate fruit trees. Legendre, a priest of Hannonsville, France was responsible for creating new methods of planting apple orchards. Martha Stewart, renowned chef and cookbook author, credit's Legendre with his 'espalier growing' method.

"Because sunlight reaches every piece of fruit that these trees bear, espalier pruning continues to be a standard procedure at commercial orchards in France." (Stewart, 2017)

This book focuses on growing healthy fruit, keeping trees from disease, pruning branches, types of land best-suited for growing, soils, and much, much more.
