About This Item

Page measures 6.5" x 7.5".

Map of the Isthmus of Darien and Bay of Panama, with North South Sea Coasts inset at top. From 'A New Voyage around the World', Volume I of 'Voyages and Descriptions in Three Parts, viz.' by Captain William Dampier. Dotted line on map indicates Dampier's route. In very good condition. Some staining and foxing to image. Some wear at original fold. Right edge of page shows tear where removed from book. Of German or Dutch origin, Herman Moll (c. 1654-1732) settled in London in the 1670's where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt. By the turn of the century, Moll became the foremost map publisher in England, where he produced Atlases and maps. As an engraver, cartographer, mapseller and globemaker he appealed to the public with his unusual views and vignettes. As the demand for his work was sustained, he issued many revised editions of his work. Hard to find.
