At the end of the 17th-century, numerous anti-Catholic pamphlets and propaganda were published being very critical of the reigns of Kings Charles II and James II. This particular book, "The Secret History of the Reigns of Charles II and James II", was written by an anonymous author, though modern scholarship attributes it to John Phillips or Robert Burton. 1741 John LOCKE Essay Concerning Human Understanding Philosophy Tabula Rasa 2v
"I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts."
– John Locke
After studying medicine under the teaching of Thomas Sydenham, John Locke began his journey of philosophical thinking that would develop into his most famous written work. 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding,' is one of the most important books on the development and cultivation of human understanding and knowledge. It is in this work that Locke first describes the idea of 'blank slate' of the mind or 'tabula rasa.' Locke's 'Essay' is known to have directly influenced famous philosophers such as David Hume and George Berkeley.
This rare 1741 two-volume edition was published in London and features a portrait of Locke.

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1927. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First American Edition, third printing as noted on dust jacket. aka An Outline of Philosophy. The text block is solid, clean and square. Endpapers are clear of markings with NO previous owner's signature. Spine is stiff and appears unread, boards rigid and tips pointed.Just a bit of tanning on the endpapers. It is a beautiful copy! The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has about a one inch loss at the upper right hand corner of the front cover with a though bit of shelf wear and tiny loss here and there on edges and at center cover and spine ends and at tips. The reason this is a third printing is that the dust jacket cover says "Third Printing...15,000." Looks dashing in its shiny new plastic cover. .

In this work, the author of the 1981 groundbreaking work After Virtue offers a poignant critique of organized Christianity, Marxism, and psychoanalysis for their failure to express the forms of thought and action that constitute our contemporary social life, and argues that a greater understanding of our complex modern world can only be achieved by a more thorough inquiry into the philosophy of the social sciences.
