Oxford: Henry Cripps, 1627 An extremely rare and interesting account of European states as they were in 1627. In new full leather binding with raised bands and gilt titles to spine. It is missing some preliminaries including probably the main title page. The title page remaining has had a paper repair and has been much written on over the centuries. There is a clear signature from 1859 but all others have been crossed out. The preface is a dedication from the author to the Bishop of Lincoln. The text is then divided into the 14 books each paginated separately. Books I to III cover England and Wales; Book IIII covers Scotland; V - VII Spain; VIII - X France; XI - XIIII (part) - Germany; and the remainder of XIIII covers Switzerland, Netherland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Croatia and and Dalmatia. A previous (early) bookseller noted "Imperfections", including missing "to Book 2nd, page 66 to 71, to Book the 3rd, page 8 to 11, page 68 to 71, page 74 to 77, page 80 to 85, and to Book the 4th, page 50 to 53" Covers are half leather with gilt title on spine, patterned paper on balance. Front hinge cracked but text block solid. Pages notably clean with some foxing, a few small tears including old repairs, and a few inky fingerprints. ; 11.75 x 7.75 x 1.60 inches .

J. B. Lippincott 1864-5. All five volumes are in fair condition. Texts are clean and unmarked. Boards are strong except the front board for volume 5 is detached. The bindings are okay. All volumes show edge wear especially at corners and head and foot of spine. The corner of volume 4 is separated from the spine at the foot for two inches. The covers show small stains. No DJ as issued.

Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Batty (1789-1848) army officer and artist Batty compiled books illustrated with plates etched by himself. He served in the Peninsular War, in the Duke of Wellington's 1815 Campaign, at Waterloo, where he was injured in the thigh. "Following Wellington's victory, Batty entered Paris with the 3rd battalion on 7 July, having en route been at the storming of the fortress of Péronne on 26 June.
