Maestricht: J. Edme Doufour & Phil. Roux, 1776. In French. Nouvelle edition, 1776. Externally fair, internally very good. Memoirs of the richest woman in France of her time, and second most powerful after the queen. She was the only child of Gaston d'Orelans, younger brother of King Louis XIII and presumptive heir to the throne. Rather than being pushed at various times into a politically expedient marriages, she endured two rounds of exile and eventually married a man she fell in love with, with that marriage to later flounder. Fascinating first-hand account of life in seventeenth century France. Full calf, edges tinted red, marbled endpapers, title pages in red and black. Covers very worn, with most of the spine labels missing, edges chipped, joints rubbed with some splitting, but covers well attached, text blocks sound with no loosened pages. Pages clean with very little foxing, no noted chips or tears. no names or bookplates, dampstains to the lower outside corners of a few leaves in volume IV. . Nouvelle Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 12mo (17.5 cm tall).
