About This Item
London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1804. xiv, 430pp. Octavo (140 x 210mm). First English edition. Contemporary tree calf with gilt dentelles along the edges of the boards, re-backed to match with with blind-stamped rules and decorations and a red morocco spine label with stamped gilt lettering. The bookplate and book label of William Strong to the front pastedown. Errata present. Some rubbing to the boards. Light foxing to the endpapers and the occasionally found throughout. Ex-libris of Darwin bibliographer, Richard Freeman, with his pencil notations to the ffep. A very good copy of this scarce book. Apparently the author, Anna Seward, had a desire to marry Erasmus Darwin and was somewhat offended when he married Elizabeth Pole after the death of his first wife. Charles Darwin was not particularly happy with this book about his grandfather and claims to have written the introduction to Krause's biography of Erasmus Darwin in order to contradict some of what Seward wrote. 1804
