The history of western monasticism has made the object of extensive investigation especially concerning the Middle Ages. This collection brings together thirty essays, organized into three sections, that provide a rigorous and historiographically accurate overview of the religion, artistic, and cultural aspects of monastic life. The analysis focuses mainly on the Vallumbrosan Order, but extends also to other branches of the Benedictine and Carthusian world, from the start of the second millennium to the end of the 19th century.
