Mental Pathology and Therapeutics, Wilhelm, Griesinger. The New Sydenham Society Volume 33. Published by The New Sydenham Society, London, 1867. First English Edition. Translated from the second German edition by C. Lockhart Robertson, MD and James Rutherford, MD. 8vo up to 9½" tall. 530pp. Brown cloth boards with gilt titles; all edges red. Foxing to first few pages and occasional spotting in text and otherwise contents are clean without markings, tears or folds. Front hinge is cracked and weak, rear hinge is weakened; back strip is missing pieces top and bottom, rubbing to corners; text block is tight and secure.
Presented in five major sections: general, the cause and mode of origin of mental disease, forms of mental disease, the pathological anatomy of mental disease, and the prognosis and treatment of mental disease. Wilhelm Griesinger (1817-1868) was a German neurologist and psychiatrist. He is noted for initiating reforms in treatment of the mentally ill as well as introducing changes to the existing asylum system. He believed in integration of the mentally ill into society, and proposed that short-term hospitalization be combined with close cooperation of natural support systems. He also provided valuable insights on the nature of psychopathic behavior.
