Don Vicente Riva Palacio (1832-1896).

Cultivou a história, a crítica, o drama e a poesia.

Work on the history of Mexico, published since 1884 by the publishing houses Espasa y Compañía (Spain) and J. Ballescá y Compañía (Mexico).

According to contemporary advertising, it was a "General and complete History of the social, political, religious, military, artistic, scientific and literary development of Mexico, from the remotest antiquity to the present time", further declaring itself as a "Unique Work of its kind".

This literary project was conceived in 1882 by the editors José Ballescá Casals and Santiago Ballescá Farró, who handed over the editorial direction to General Vicente Riva Palacio. The Ballescá editors, were mainly responsible for its general and artistic direction. Historians such as Alfredo Chavero, Juan de Dios Arias, Enrique de Olavarría y Ferrari, José María Vigil and Julio Zárate participated in its authorship. Riva Palacio himself wrote the second volume dedicated to the 'Colonia'.

Don Vicente Riva Palacio (1832-1896). 'As a journalist and politician, he participated in the revolutions that followed the restoration of the Republic. He was Minister of Public Works, governor of the states of Mexico and Michoacán, judge of the Supreme Court of Justice, and ended his days as Minister Plenipotentiary in Spain. He cultivated history, criticism, drama and poetry. He had a taste for the historical novel and can be considered the creator of this genre in Mexico" (History of Mexican Literature, pp. 299-301, 338)”.

During the revolutionary government of President Juan Alvarez, Vicente Riva Palacio was in charge of the City Council of Mexico City. Riva Palacio became governor of the state, and was one of two generals in charge of the Mexican army during the decisive battle in 1867 in which the Mexicans defeated the forces of the French imperialist Maximilian. The political leader of the struggle against Maximilian was President Benito Juarez, the pure Indian from Oaxaca.

Juarez appointed Riva Palacio to obtain the colonial records from the Spanish Inquisition and compile them for publication. Juarez believed that the Inquisition records would reveal the degree of backwardness due to the "doldrums" of Mexico during the three long centuries of Spanish domain. Riva Palacio used the Inquisition files, and other records, to create novels, short stories, historical works, political papers and more.

In the 1880s, Riva Palacio assembled a team of scholars who produced the five volume MEXICO A TRAVES DE LOS SIGLOS, (Mexico through the Centuries), which can be found on the shelves of virtually every public library in the Mexican nation. He died in Spain in 1896. He was then living in semi-exile due to his opposition to the dictatorial policies of President Porfirio Diaz.
