1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Circa 1875 edition of popular captivity narrative. Nelson & Phillips, New York. Spencer was 11 when captured in 1792. Brown blindstamped cloth, gilt title on spine. Condition is Very Good: Recased using original boards sometime in last 40 years. Modern endpapers. No interior writing, occasional foxing, some smudges, old corner folds. Small hole pp.13/14 affecting a few letters. Binding is sound. 160 pages with 4 plates and 4 engravings embedded in text all included in pagination. Contents bound at end as usual with this book. The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania. Lettered direct in black and red to front board and spine. Publisher's device (arbor scientiae, arbor vitae) stamped in black at lower right corner of front board. Top edge gilt. Pages uncut and untrimmed. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard intact. Vignette title page bearing motto (Sperate miseri, cavete felices) and publisher's device. Thirty-two chapters. Preface and notes by Austin Dobson. Minor shelf wear and soiling. Binding firm. Hinges tight. Spine square. Browning to leading rough page edges and endpapers. Previous owner's signature at top of front pastedown, else internally bright and unmarked.

Text slightly tanned typical of age, clean and unmarked. Former owner attribution on front free endpapers. Front free endpaper has dark discoloration triangle caused by a piece of newsprint left in book. Illustrated throughout with b/w etchings and drawings. This title is very rare. Unable to locate existence of any other copies for comparison.
