About This Item

New York: The MacMillan Company, 1939. First Edition, First Printing. . Hardcover. About Very Good/Good Plus. A mid-career mystery from this prolific British writer, who, in addition to over 100 novels, also wrote poetry, radio plays and a variety of non-fiction from the 1890s well into the 1950s. "Monkshood" is a story about a chef, an unfaithful wife and a doctor, who long after the fact, reconstructs a murder by poison of a poisoner whose own attempt at murder was a failure. Blue cloth-covered boards show some spotting and dampstaining, and a slight spine lean, o/w boards and text are clean, unmarked and tight, not remaindered. The dustjacket shows considerable wear and creasing along the edges and at the corners with a large chip missing at the top of the spine and lesser but still significant chipping at the spine bottom, with the publisher's name partially gone. That said, the dj is about 85 to 90% whole with no other lettering or design elements missing. All four corners of the dj flaps have been clipped, though the original $2 price remains. A far-from-perfect but still quite decent copy for anyone interested in Phillpotts' sometimes bizarre plots and eccentric characters.
