Philadelphia: John C. Clark & Son, 1865. Good. One mortgage form printed and sold by John C. Clark & Son, Philadelphia. 4 p.; 46 x 29 cm. (folded). On 9 Feb. 1865 William Howell of the city of Philadelphia, paper hanging manufacturer, mortgaged to Ferdinand J. Dreer of the same place, jeweller, for $6,555 the lot at 22nd and Washington Ave., which Howell has just bought from Dreer. Signed by William Howell, with his seal, witnesses B. Frank Hess, J. H. Burkart, and Williams Ogle, and Recorder of Deeds for the city and county of Philadelphia L. R. Broomall, with his embossed stamp. Acknowledgement of satisfaction on 2 Sept. 1871. Ferdinand J. Dreer (1812-1902) was very successsful as a jeweler and goldsmith, which allowed him to support many organizations that raised the quality of life in Philadelphia: the Academy of Music, the Philadelphia Female Medical College, the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War, and the Union League Club. He was also the vice president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to which he gave his large autograph and manuscript collection. In Good Condition: separating along center fold; starting to separate at lower edge along folds; small stain at upper right-hand corner of first page; otherwise, clean and solid.
