About This Item
Synopsis
Saul Bellow was a Canadian-born American writer. For his literary contributions, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. Mr. Sammler’s Planet was the 1971 recipient of the National Book Awards. In this compelling reflection of life in New York City at the end of the 1960’s, Mr. Sammler is an aging Holocaust survivor who literally pulled himself out of a mass grave created when Nazi’s gunned victims down during an action. The novel follows a few days in the life of Sammler as he is living among his rich nephew’s family and his own daughter’s. Very sore of heart, he reflects on the degradations of city life and observes the sufferings of the human soul. An astute, moral and ultimately sublime novel, it is compelling and well-told.
