Her delightful journal was made up of her weekly letters to her widowed mother at Killyleagh, the ancient and beauiful Norman castle near Belfast where Hariot Hamilton had been born and where she lived until her marriage in 1862. These letters were written in diary style, reporting with humour, shrewdness, and candour the incidents that made up the private and public lives of the Dufferins and their entourage in Canada, from the rough Atlantic crossing with their two youngest children to Lord Dufferin's replacement by the Marquis of Lorne, whose wife was Princess Louise, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Lady Dufferin explained in her Preface that as 'the Governor-General and his wife belonged to no party,' she eschewed political topics and only alluded to them 'I fear, in a somewhat light and irresponsible spirit'. Herin lies the charm of this rambling account of more leisurely and lavish days - Lady Dufferin's touch is light and her pleasures and interest in all she did and saw in Canada come through to us today as gaily as they must have done nearly a century ago."- Scarce- only 2 World cat holdings- Non-fiction-journal-travel-Canadiana-illustrated.......
