About This Item

Fine condition - no discernible flaws. Quarto; 369 pp. Limited edition of 300 copies, 200 of which were for private distribution and 100 for sale. No dust jacket, as issued, but with clear acetate cover. Inscribed by Zigrosser to former owner K.M. Setton of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study.

Carl Zigrosser (1891-1975) was an art dealer best known for running the Weyhe Gallery in New York, probably the first major gallery to concentrate on prints, in the 1920's and 1930's, and as Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art between 1940 and 1963. Zigrosser's autobiography is a detailed account of his life as an art dealer, gallery manager, print expert, museum curator, art writer and family man. He was acquainted with virtually every major dealer and artist of the first half of the 20th century, and close friends with artists such as Rockwell Kent, with whom he collaborated, Wanda Gág, Diego Rivera, Teng Kuei, Heinz Warneke, René d'Harnoncourt, Alexander Calder, Alfred Stiglitz, Jules Pascin, Emil Ganso etc.

It makes for interesting reading for anyone interested in the art world of prints in the first half of of the last century, and while Zigrosser may come across as somewhat egotistical, he was undeniably a person of accomplishment and influence in his section of the art world of the time.
