Description:
NY: Pantheon. Very Good in Good dust jacket; Top corners bumped, jacket grubby and has . several chips, one small water spot to jacket at center of spine.. [1951]. First American Edition. Hardcover. Yellow boards with title stamped in various fonts in black on front. Black cloth spine with title stamped in yellow. A comic classic of modern Irish literature, first published in England in 1939. Though Graham Greene championed the novel (his Pantheon front jacket blurb trumpets "A book in a thousand...in the line of Ulysses and Tristram Shandy." ) , and later book blurbs quote Dylan Thomas' mini-book review: "This is just the book to give your sister if she's a loud, dirty, boozy girl." ) , it was initially not a hot seller. All of the unsold first edition copies were destroyed during World War II bombings. At Swim-Two-Birds appears on Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Novels list, The Modern Library Reader's List of 100 best novels, and The Guardian's list of… Read More

The binding just a fraction cocked and with some fairly light fox spotting throughout. Former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. Very good in lightly rubbed, marked and chipped yet still very crisp price-clipped dust wrapper. The author's sixth novel, detailing the early months of the Second World War, written in July 1941 following Waugh's return home after the evacuation of Crete, and with a printed dedication to Randolph Churchill who was instrumental in Waugh's wartime commission. The stories were written by ten different authors chosen from around the world, each of whom was assigned an individual Commandment, the overall purpose being an international condemnation of Nazi atrocities. Mann was assigned the First Commandment and his piece was entitled "Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me" ("Das Gesetz," or "The Law" in German). In 1945 Alfred A.
