First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 255pp. Publisher's original oatmeal cloth, lettered in blue at the spine and with the blue top edge stain, resulting in just a fraction of bleeding to the upper margin of a single text leaf. The binding just a fraction cocked and with some fairly light fox spotting throughout. Former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. Very good in lightly rubbed, marked and chipped yet still very crisp price-clipped dust wrapper. The author's sixth novel, detailing the early months of the Second World War, written in July 1941 following Waugh's return home after the evacuation of Crete, and with a printed dedication to Randolph Churchill who was instrumental in Waugh's wartime commission. Thomas Mann’s compelling novella on the life of Moses, which first appeared in 1943 as part of a larger collection of ten novellas edited by literary agent Armin L. Robinson and published by Simon & Schuster under the name "The Ten Commandments, Ten Short Novels Of Hitler’s War Against The Moral Code." The stories were written by ten different authors chosen from around the world, each of whom was assigned an individual Commandment, the overall purpose being an international condemnation of Nazi atrocities. The stated first edition of this rare and essential 1928 collection of writings by one of the greatest of American essayists (including works published in Harper's and The American Mercury). No interior markings noted (aside from penciled minor marks to decorative front endpapers); binding has a bit of soil and wear and is a presumed second state (first state, as noted in colophon, was a linoleum block print design by Prentiss Taylor). Highly recommended.
