About This Item

London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1817.. 4to. (28.5 x 22.6 cm). 1 [blank] + xiii 1 ff. + 376 + 1 [blank] + 7 plates & one folding map. Uncut and unpressed in original boards with label to spine. 7 full-page aquatint plates, folding map of Tripoli and Tunis. Binding rubbed and a little stained, still very attractive. Map with some light damp staining. A wide margined fresh and clean copy. Second and best edition, published a year after the first. A handsomely illustrated work, with 7 aquatint plates (the first edition contains 5). The plates mainly depict customs, antiquities, and the manners & architecture of the region. The work is ostensibly a collection of letters written by Miss Tully, sister-in-law of Richard Tully, British Consul in Triupoli; it is arguably one of the most valuable sources of information on Tripoli and the region of the early 19th century. Abbey, Travel, 301. Tooley, 493. Blackmer, 1682.
