This narrative by the Commander of the expedition has been extensively revised from the 1849 first edition, with additions to the text. With two folding maps in fine condition. Bound in quarter green leather and marbled boards with gilt titles and raised bands. Spot touch-up of leather color by conservator; mild rubbing to edges; internally fine and tight. A solid, well preserved copy in bright spine gilt.

Minor shelf wear to head and foot of spine and corners, light foxing mostly confined to endpapers and prelims, a few page corners turned, slightly pullled at sewn gatherings. Map of River Jordan creased with several tears (longest approx 1"); map of Dead Sea has a couple of short tears. Quite a nice copy of this account of an important expedition to the Middle East conducted in 1847. This edition has several additions, and several errors corrected from the first impression. Some reference to Islam, as well as well written travel information, and observations of geographic features, natural history and the poeples of the region.. New & Corrected Edition. Hard Cover.
