About This Item
Chicago: National Party, 1917. Pamphlet. Six-panel brochure, 3.5x6 inches; cover has a piece of brown paper tape covering the word "Party," which has been restored in pen; "Pro-War" has been penned right below. On the rear panel is a penciled note, "Spargo et al" (a reference to the participation of John Spargo). Some pen underlining in the text. The Chicago-based National Party was founded by defectors from the Socialist Party who opposed its 1917 anti-war position, joined by members of the Nonpartisan League and others from the Prohibition Party, suffragist and Single Tax movements. This brief introduction outlines support for universal suffrage and proportional representation, prohibition of liquor, and industrial democracy.
