Top edge gilt. Pp448, pp440. Both volumes have tipped in vignette wood engraved proofs on Japan on to title page and 10 others throughout, as called for. Many wood engraved images within text and full page, throughout both volumes. Binding bumped at edges, hinges skillfully strengthened. Some light foxing to prelims, all illustrations and text in clean, strong order. The Japan prints are in excellent condition. A very good illustrated commentary on a variety of country sports including Trout Fishing in the Rangeley Lakes, American Sporting Dogs, North American Grouse, Hunting the Mule Deer in Colorado and Fox Hunting in New England.

The covers show rubbing which enhances the period appearance. Endpapers are marbled, gilt top edge, clean contents and a tight binding. This edition was part of the "Burt's Library of the World's Best Books" series and, unlike the typical A.L. Burt reprint, is bound in a high quality binding.

Illustrated with frontispiece, "The Aviary", and black & white illustrations in the text. Publisher's advertisements at rear. Both Harding and Richardson indicate that several issues of this "new edition" follows the stated second edition, and thus our date range. Later printings have various different paginations. "Rev. John Wood was a popular lecturer on many subjects and wrote many books on natural history" (Harding). Some wear to edges of a few leaves; foxing to endpapers and preliminaries. In black-titled and -decorated orange cloth, with publisher's advertisement on the rear board; cloth somewhat soiled and mottled but still legible. Good only. Reissue of this illustrated visitor's guide to the magisterial Age of Reptiles mural in the Great Hall of Yale's Peabody Museum, written by John Ostrom, one of the most important palaeontologists of the 20th century. Originally published in 1966 in the same pamphlet form. A beautiful copy in unusually nice condition. "The Age of Reptiles mural is an artistic masterpiece and was, for its time, perhaps the most scientifically accurate representation of the Mesozoic world ever created" (Black, "Creating the Age of Reptiles", Smithsonian Magazine, January 3, 2012).
