An important Mitford edition, with the text corrected and expanded from the first edition, the quarto edition.Illustrated with a folding plate to the frontispiece, one hand-coloured plate, seven plates, and vignettes.Collated, complete. 'The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne' is an influential work on antiquities and the natural history of Selborne, a village in East Hampshire, England.This is a collection of letters documenting the natural history of the area around Selborne, written by Gilbert White to other prominent antiquarians and natural historians of his time.The work was well received upon its publication, and has continued to be widely read well into the twentieth century. Fans of the work include the likes of Virginia Woolf, John Ruskin, Charles Darwin, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It is generally considered to be a classic of nature writing and antiquarian writing.Gilbert White is best known for this work. He worked as a curate for his whole life, and was pioneering as a naturalist and ornithologist.Bookplate to the front paste down. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards, with the original spine laid down. Externally, generally, smart. Small label to the tail of the spine. Rubbing to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Some light marks to the boards. A little loss of paper to the joints. Bookplate and pencil note to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with the occasional spot and handling mark. Neat repairs to the reverse of the folding frontispiece. Amateur repair between the verso of the front endpaper and half title. Good
