EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1838 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition of Part 1 of Birds of Great Britain and Ireland from the Naturalist's Library. In the publisher's 'luxury' green leather binding with aeg. Issued as a volume rather than in parts, this has a different vignette title page to the norm (the title is different). With black and white frontispiece portrait of Sibbald, vignette title page, a further title page, publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Sir Robert Sibbald; text with black and white illustrations; and 34 hand coloured plates. The binding has wear to edges and to spine joints (particularly at the front), and also to corners. There is scuffing particularly to the top edges of the boards. The original yellow endpapers are present with a small ink signature to the front pastedown. Both front and rear endpapers have slight grubbiness. There is a small split to the top 2cm of the joint of the fep with the book block. The contents are very bright and clean and the plates beautifully coloured. The original page marker is present, although detached. Some page corners have been turned over. There is loss to the bottom left margin of plate 26 which does not affect the image (an owl).

Description:
LONDON : A[ndrew]. C[lark]. for John Martyn, 1678 A very good copy in a high quality full leather binding. With title page in red and black ink; preface; text in 3 books with 2 plates of bird traps bound in, and 2 tables which serve as early identification keys; an appendix; summary of falconry; index and 78 plates of birds (including the dodo) at the rear. This is the first English edition translated from the original Latin which was published in 1676, four years after Willughby's death by his friend and colleague John Ray. It marks one of the first attempts to take a rational, scientific approach to classifying birds. It is a matter of debate, and current research, as to whether Willughby or Ray played a greater part in its development. Ray supervised the publication. The illustrations were commissioned from a number of sources and some birds are depicted twice where the initial image was not very good. This copy lacks the original endpapers - perhaps lost during the later rebinding - but is… Read More

From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.… Read More
