About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company, Inc., 1924. First American Edition, First Printing . Dark Green Cloth. Near Fine/No Dust Jacket. 8 3/4" High.. 10 Illustrations. Xvi, 167 Pp. Dark Green Cloth, Gilt. First American Printing, 1924, Using Sheets Printed In Great Britain. Clean, Unmarked Pages. No Inscriptions. Covers Clean; Gilt Lettering On Spine Brilliant And Complete, Near Fine. In The Long Biography Published In The Biographical Memoirs Of The National Academy Of Sciences In 1957, The Writer Notes That "It Is Quite Appropriate To Say That Louis Leon Thurstone Was To Psychology Of The First Half Of The Twentieth Century What Gustav Theodore Fechner Was To The Last Half Of The Nineteenth. Fechner Was The Father Of Quantitative Psychology; Thurstone Was Its Chief Torchbearer In Recent Years. In Addition To His Many Novel Contributions During The Past Thirty Years, We Have As Memorials To Him The Psychometric Society And The Journal Psychometrika, Both Of Which Were Founded Through His Initiative. Their Motto Was Essentially His Own Motto: The Development Of Psychology As A Quantitative, Rational Science...A Major Contribution To Psychological Theory Was In His Monograph On Intelligence, Which Appeared In 1924. He Developed And Supported The Thesis That The Degree Of Intelligence Is Related To The Degree Of Incompleteness Of An Act At The Time In Which It Becomes Focal In Consciousness. Becoming Highly Aware Of An Act During Its Early Stages Offers Much Opportunity To Bring To Bear Upon It A Wider Range Of Choice Or Determination." This Lost Art Of Self-Awareness Of Intelligence Is Perhaps Due To The Success Of Relatively Thoughtless But Excessively Verbose Media Celebrities, Particularly Politicians, Who Avoid Substantive Discussions Entirely Because They Can Only Achieve Success By Loud, Unsupported Assertions Which Will Be Supported By The Equally Thoughtless.
