London: The Haworth Press, 1934. Signed and Numbered Limited Edition. Full Leather. This is among the rarest and most desirable books with contributions by Sir Winston S. Churchill. The publisher produced 50 signed and numbered copies of this aptly named "Deluxe Limited Edition". Each copy is numbered and signed by Churchill directly below the limitation statement. This is copy number 31 of 50. Each was bound in full chestnut Niger Morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with exquisite attention to detail, including raised spine bands terminating in blind-stamped flowered hinge designs on the covers, gilt decoration to all edges, and blind-ruled turn-ins. The contents are printed on hand-made, water-marked, laid paper bound with head and foot bands, gilt top edge, and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. BOUND BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE, LONDON is gilt-stamped on the lower front pastedown turn-in. This venerable firm, founded by Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe in 1901, was a leading London bookbinder and, like Churchill himself, endured the First World War, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and post-war austerity.

This copy is in very good condition. The binding is lightly soiled and modestly spine toned, but nonetheless remains fully intact, square and tight, the leather supple with no cracking and no appreciable scuffing or wear, the corners sharp, and the edge and spine gilt bright. The contents remain bright, as does the gilt top edge and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. We find no previous ownership marks. A trivial hint of spotting appears confined to the fore edges and we note browning at the perimeter of the endpapers where they have been in contact with the leather turn-ins.

Few works read by Churchill seem to have impacted his own writing so substantially. Churchill was the driving force behind publication of a 1934 reprint, which attracted the unique honor of not only Churchill's lengthy introduction, but also this publisher's limited edition signed by Churchill. It is noteworthy that the only work authored by Churchill for which a publisher's signed and finely bound limited edition was issued is Churchill's own history of Marlborough - which is of course the work so influenced by Paget.

John Paget's Examen was first issued in 1861 as a vindication of the Duke of Marlborough, openly critical of Macaulay. Between 1933 and 1938, Winston Churchill published his own extensive, four-volume biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough. The major impact of Paget's work on Churchill is well-documented. Upon returning a borrowed copy of the original Examen, Churchill wrote to Lord Rosebery in 1924: "I have now obtained another copy of my own by advertising, and I am very glad indeed to possess such a little known and deeply interesting book. It certainly has cleared away some of the difficulties that I had felt to eventually undertaking to write about 'Duke John'." (Gilbert, Companion Volume V.1, p.290). Pagets analysis of Macaulays calumnies and Churchills own researches fired his family pride anew. (Woods, Artillery of Words, p.111)

Marlborough: His Life and Times ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial literary work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. When Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, it was partly for mastery of historical and biographical description on the strength of Marlborough, which was specifically cited and quoted by the Swedish Academy. Arguably, this work and the accompanying accolades were catalyzed by Paget. In 1934, Churchill wrote a substantial, seven-page "Critical Introduction" to this new edition of Paget's Examen. In a letter to Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin Churchill wrote: "I send you herewith Paget's Examen resurrected by my exertions. I think you shd keep it in yr library alongside of Macaulay, to which it is a necessary corrective and counterpart." (Gilbert, Companion Volume V.2, p.735)

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and… Read More

Description:
London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1945. Political edition," only printing. Pamphlet. This is an extraordinarily fine example of the only printing of the "Political" edition of this striking wartime speech pamphlet. Published in April, 1945, by the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, this was a campaign piece for the forthcoming General Election, containing Churchill's March 15, 1945 address to the Party Conference at Central Hall, Westminster. It attests to the fact that, as the war in Europe drew toward an inexorable close, the suspended tensions of domestic politics intruded ever more urgently on the politically unified war effort, fracturing the wartime coalition that had acknowledged Churchill as its indispensible Prime Minister. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would remain Leader of the Opposition until… Read More

Melbourne, Australia: The Henry George Foundation, January 1942. Second Edition. Paperback. Second edition, first printing. Near fine condition. This is a wartime reprint of extracts from two Churchill speeches delivered in the House of Commons on 4 May 1909 and at King's Theatre, Edinburgh, 17 July 1909. This pamphlet was first published as "The Menace of Land Monopoly" by the Henry George foundation in 1941. In 1942 the pamphlet was retitled and republished as "On Human Rights". The publisher's introductory note states: "In now publishing these extracts it is hoped that Mr. Churchill's eloquent and emphatic criticism of the present Land System will not be lost sight of in the post-war reconstruction for a New Social Order of which so much is being heard." The pamphlet measures 7.125 inches tall x 4.75 inches wide. It is sixteen pages in length with stapled cream colored card wraps. The front cover bears a decidedly resolute head and shoulders image of Churchill. This copy is crisp and bright.… Read More

London (and New York): Hodder and Stoughton (for George H. Doran Company), 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing, first state. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. This copy is the elusive first state of the first American edition. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. Description:
Toronto: William Briggs, 1909. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. This genuine rarity is the first and only Canadian issue of My African Journey, among the scarcest English language first editions of Churchill's book-length works. We have seen only a precious few on the market over many years. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains." In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book. By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from… Read More

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
